Suka Duka Tawa Review: A Pick for Dramedy Fans Who Love Stand-Up

This suka duka tawa review starts with a simple question: what happens when a comedian mines her own family pain for laughs? Aco Tenriyagelli's directorial debut is an Indonesian comedy-drama that balances stage banter with real hurt. It does not always land its jokes, but it often lands its feelings.

Suka Duka Tawa Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

Tawa, played by Rachel Amanda, is a 21-year-old stand-up comedian who has found fame by joking about her tough childhood. Her favourite target is her father, Keset, a former comedian whose career has collapsed and whose mistakes fuel her best bits.

The film's plot kicks in when the two meet again. Tawa wants new material, and Keset is willing to put his own shame on the table to help. Their uneasy collaboration puts them on stage together, and the laughter starts to mask older pain.

The tagline sums up the idea: sometimes the loudest laughter comes from the deepest wounds. That premise gives the film a clear spine and plenty of room for both humour and heartache.

What Works in Suka Duka Tawa

The best thing here is tone. The film moves between comedy and drama without whiplash, and viewers have praised how consistent it feels from start to finish.

• Restraint with music. Emotional scenes are not drowned in swelling strings. The film lets moments breathe, and that makes them hit harder.

• Humour beyond slapstick. The comedy leans on character and situation rather than cheap gags.

• A strong central idea. Turning private pain into public entertainment is a rich theme, and the script keeps coming back to its cost.

For a first feature, Aco Tenriyagelli shows a confident hand. Co-writer Indriani Agustina shares the script credit, and the pair give the father-daughter relationship real texture.

Suka Duka Tawa Cast and Performances

The suka duka tawa cast is led by Rachel Amanda as Tawa. She carries the film with a mix of stage bravado and visible fragility. One critic noted that the whole cast plays their roles smoothly, and that holds up.

Teuku Rifnu Wikana plays Keset, the faded comedian father, and he is the emotional anchor of the story. Marissa Anita appears as Cantik, while Myesha Lin plays Young Tawa. Arif Brata (Nasi) and Gilang Bhaskara (Fachri) fill out the supporting group.

The pairing of Amanda and Wikana is the reason to care. Their scenes work best when the jokes drop away and the two simply look at each other.

Where Suka Duka Tawa Stumbles

A film about stand-up lives or dies on its jokes, and this is the sore spot. One reviewer argued that none of the stand-up bits are actually funny, and an IMDb user called the comedy a bit flat. Those opinions are not universal, but they point to a real risk.

Length is the other issue. At 127 minutes, the drama can feel draggy in places, and the film could have been tighter.

Some conflicts are also resolved too easily. One viewer felt certain resolutions were flat and underwhelming, which blunts some of the emotional build-up.

Is Suka Duka Tawa Worth Watching?

Yes, if you value performances and emotional honesty over big laughs. Is Suka Duka Tawa worth watching comes down to what you expect from a comedy: here the drama is the stronger half.

Critical reception is mixed but leaning positive. IMDb shows 7.3/10, and the film drew positive responses at the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival. The suka duka tawa release date in Indonesia was January 8, 2026, and you can check Suka Duka Tawa on IMDb for more details.
