How we rate moviesIn this article
This Verity review starts with a simple question: can a stellar cast lift a familiar page-turner onto the screen? Michael Showalter directs this mystery thriller, adapted from Colleen Hoover's best-selling novel, with Dakota Johnson and Anne Hathaway in the lead roles. The result is polished and often fun, but it rarely surprises.
Verity Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) is a writer whose career is going nowhere. After a quiet book signing, she gets an offer that could change her fortunes. Best-selling novelist Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway) has been seriously injured in a car accident, and her publisher needs someone to finish her current series.
Lowen is nervous, but Verity's husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) persuades her to take the job. She moves into the family's remote, luxurious home in Montana to go through Verity's notes. There she finds a manuscript that was never meant to be read.
That is the setup of the Verity plot, and it is a good one. A stranger in a lavish house, a hidden document and a family that may not be what it seems all promise real tension. Whether the film delivers on that promise is the question that matters most.
What Works in Verity
The premise still has pull. A ghostwriter reading secrets she should not see is a hook that works in any thriller, and the film uses it well in its early stretch.
A strong sense of place. The isolated Montana house feels beautiful and slightly suffocating, which suits a story about trust and obsession.
Committed melodrama. The film leans into its soapy, heightened tone instead of apologising for it. Some viewers will find that campy, others will find it entertaining.
A cast above the material. The three leads treat the story seriously, and that keeps the film watchable even when the script coasts.
Showalter, who has handled tone shifts before, keeps the film moving at a steady, glossy pace. It looks expensive and feels like a proper star vehicle, which counts for something in the thriller genre.
Verity Cast and Performances
The Verity cast is the main reason to press play. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen with quiet curiosity and a growing vulnerability, and her screen presence anchors the film. Audience reviews single out her slow slide into obsession as one of its more captivating threads.
Anne Hathaway is the standout. Critics who found the film underwhelming still describe her as a league above everyone else, and she brings real menace and magnetism to a role that could have been one-note. Josh Hartnett rounds out the trio as Jeremy, bringing a charming, unsettled energy that keeps you guessing about his intentions.
Brady Wagner, Ismael Cruz Cordova and Irina Dvorovenko appear in supporting roles as Crew, Corey and Anna. The film belongs to its three leads, though.
Where Verity Stumbles
The biggest problem is predictability. Much of the early critical reaction notes that the twists feel familiar, as if you have seen them in other romantic thrillers. If you know the genre, you may stay a step or two ahead of the story.
Pacing is the second issue. Some scenes stall before arriving where you expected them to go, and at 117 minutes the film can feel stretched. The tension never fully tightens.
The erotic and trashy elements promised by the marketing also feel muted. Viewers expecting a dark, daring psychological thriller may find the result closer to a glossy TV drama. Reactions are split, with some audience reviews warmly positive and others harshly negative.
Is Verity Worth Watching?
Yes, Verity is worth watching if you come for the performances and a moody mystery, not for fresh surprises. It is a solid, entertaining thriller with a standout turn from Hathaway, but it does not rise above its familiar formula. Audience scores on TMDB sit at 6.8 out of 10, which feels about right.
The film is rated R and arrives on 30 September 2026. If you want to see it, check the Verity page on IMDb for the latest information. If you enjoy twisty page-to-screen stories, you can also browse our mystery movie reviews or try Obsession, another 2026 film about desire gone wrong.
